A group of international diplomats has visited Shan State to conduct a fact-finding mission in support of peace efforts.
EU Ambassador Roland Kobia, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Country Director Jason Eligh and U.S. Ambassador Derek Mitchell took part in the joint-mission to southern and eastern Shan State in early December, the first trip of its kind.
The diplomats reportedly visited previously-restricted areas to observe the security situation and explore alternative livelihoods opportunities, according to a joint press release.
During the five-day trip the delegation met with government officials and ethnic communities in Taungyi, Panglong and Tachilek to gain first-hand knowledge of peace-building and development challenges.
The current cease-fire, they were told, has been key to improvements in health, education and sustainable development.
